What Happens in Vegas………

We just got back from Las Vegas where we attended the 2011 Word of Mouth Marketing Association’s annual summit. Unlike most Sin City trips, what happened in Vegas will not be staying there; we’re dying to share the details of our trip with you and our coworkers.

“It all starts with a conversation” is our motto. It’s something that we promote heavily to our clients because in reality, our ultimate goal is to get people talking. We want to raise the awareness of certain conditions and brands, and we do this by starting with people. People are our currency, and thankfully, we have some serious gold. We don’t advertise or do giveaways, we just tap into what people do naturally, and that is to speak!

So, why were we attending?

Pharma word of mouth is not an over-saturated market; in fact, we kind of stand alone (for a number of reasons), and it’s important that at these types of events, pharma WOM has a representative voice.

When I mentioned to people what it is that we do at HealthTalker, there was a blend of surprise, curiosity and enthusiasm.  I would hear questions like,

  • How do you do that?
  • Isn’t that highly regulated?
  • Do people really want to promote drugs?
  • We wouldn’t touch pharmaceuticals – that is so difficult!

Much like the model we promote, pharma’s presence in the WOM arena needs to start with a conversation – and we were honored to have the chance to present at the conference. Attending the show - and bringing our client, Shire Pharmaceuticals, along for the ride - provided a forum for us to address fellow attendees thoughts, questions and concerns, enhancing the conversation and its continuance long past this 3-day conference.

We presented a case study on how we helped Shire apply WOM techniques to raise awareness and drive adoption for their ADHD medications—a mom-focused program that both Shire and HealthTalker are extremely proud.

If it all starts with a conversation, then we most certainly hope that our presence at this year’s WOMMA summit keeps people talking in the months ahead!
