Welcome back to HealthTalker’s special #FollowFriday recommendations.
Each week we like to give back to our community by highlighting our top 5 Tweeple; the people whose tweets provide us with valuable industry insight, trending news and sometimes, just a smile.
Keeping us busy on Twitter this week are:
@healthythinker:
Not only are we huge fans of Jane Sarasohn-Kahn’s Health Populi website, but we were lucky enough to see her speak earlier this year in Philadelphia. Her bio lists impressive titles including health economist, advisor, consumer health proponent, participatory health advocate, design fan, and health-technophile. Whatever she wants to call herself, we can’t get enough!
@mashable:
Pete Cashmore and Mashable need no introduction. ...

Once upon a time – about ten years ago – traditional advertising was King. Companies worked with the King to control their message and told consumers what they wanted them to know about their product when they wanted them to know it. Educating the consumer was completely in the hands of the business.
In the last decade we’ve watched this one-sided method of advertising be dethroned by more authentic marketing techniques such as content marketing (social media and inbound marketing) and word of mouth marketing. In today’s technological world, marketers can no longer buy the attention of consumers through mass marketing techniques. People are no longer interested in hearing about products only from the companies who manufacturer them; ...

Drum Roll please…
This Week’s Top Five influencers are:
@GalenMoore
Galen is the web editor at the Boston Business Journal and an avid Tweeter. While he spent his childhood growing up in California and Japan, he is always our main man for Boston business news. While it may be cliché, we totally hear it first from Galen.
@RichMeyer
With more than 17 years’ experience with a focus on consumer behavior and marketing, Rich is an outstanding Twitter handle to follow. We love his motto of always asking why, or at least why not! Check out his ...

It’s bizarre to think of the pharma industry as un-human, but to me that was the theme of my trip to Philadelphia for the Social Health and e-Patient Connections conferences this week.
It was a really fascinating couple of days for me, and I enjoyed it immensely. People discussed the FDA and how they prevent marketers from doing what they want, but as Seth Godin put it, “The FDA never said you can’t be human.” How true, how true.
I heard other things such as:
So how exactly do we humanize it? The system is made by humans, so where is the disconnect? After years and years of operating in a way that separates ...

It’s a beautiful morning in Philadelphia - I’m here for two days to attend two separate health conferences on behalf of HealthTalker. The first is Social Health (SXSH), the brainchild of our good friend Shwen Gwee (@Shwen). This one-day unconference is debunking the theory of a conference, and I like what I see already. We’re here to make the pharmaceutical industry a more social place (imagine that!). The second conference is the now famous ePatient Connections with keynote from the one and only Seth Godin. We’re all big Seth-heads at HealthTalker, and I’m psyched to hear his take on the pharma space.
In an industry where I sometimes struggle to figure out who the client is - the pharmaceutical company or the patient - I’m really ...

Recently, I spent a weekend camping with my son, Caleb and his Cub Scout pack. It was a fine time to spend outdoors and everyone had a blast. After dinner one night, everyone gathered around the fire for skits. My son and I did a skit that I made up called “Sure Beats Walkin!” In addition to being a fun, entertaining skit, it has a deeper meaning as well… one that resonates here at Healthtalker.
The skit starts with me walking into the scene with Caleb on my shoulders. The Cubmaster, standing off to the side, asks “Caleb, why are you riding on your Dad’s shoulders?”
Caleb replies in an upbeat voice: “Sure beats walkin’!” Exit stage left.
Next scene: I walk in with Caleb on my back. The Cubmaster asks, “Caleb, why are you riding on your ...

We just got back from Las Vegas where we attended the 2011 Word of Mouth Marketing Association’s annual summit. Unlike most Sin City trips, what happened in Vegas will not be staying there; we’re dying to share the details of our trip with you and our coworkers.
“It all starts with a conversation” is our motto. It’s something that we promote heavily to our clients because in reality, our ultimate goal is to get people talking. We want to raise the awareness of certain conditions and brands, and we do this by starting with people. People are our currency, and thankfully, we have some serious gold. We don’t advertise or do giveaways, we just tap into what people do naturally, and that is to speak!
So, why were we attending?
Pharma word ...

Working in a small, start-up company has it’s pros and cons, for sure, but one of the biggest benefits is the sense of camaraderie… family even... that can develop when the company is small and the people are all working closely together, such as here at HealthTalker. I mean, if you think about it, we are together 8+ hours for five days each week. That’s more time than I’m around my family, practically speaking.
The interpersonal dynamic, much like a family, has it’s ups and downs. And much like a family, when people get along, it’s really a lot of fun to be with them. Working with people you respect is important… and if you like them as well, it makes your day enjoyable. The work becomes less “work”.
In most companies with TONS to do (like ...

I had the unique privilege to go hear Seth Godin speak in downtown Boston a couple weeks ago. As a recent convert to the Seth-Fandom tribe, it was quite a treat to hear him live and see what he’s really like. I was not disappointed.
Seth took the audience on a brief catch-up of his books and how the story weaves through them. He ended up by talking a lot about the concepts from his latest book: Linchpin. If you haven’t yet read it, I highly recommend it. It’s a refreshing look at what it means to work passionately.
After speaking for a bit, Seth opened it up for question and answer time. I took the plunge and asked one: “You speak about the need to ship as well as the goal of treating work as art. How do you deal with them when they are in ...

While I am extremely disappointed by the Boston Celtics game 7 loss in the NBA Finals against the LA Lakers, this is not a bitter sports blog post. Instead, it is about good (and bad) email marketing techniques.
Following that disappointing loss, it appears that Massachusetts residents were treated to a glorious email from our friends at NBCSports.com. “Shop Lakers Championship Gear Now!” states NBCSports.com. I was angered. I was confused. And I wasn’t alone. I took to this blog, others took to Twitter.
@Jmeserve: NBCSports.com doesn’t know what email list segmentation is as evidenced by the “buy Laker championship gear” email I just received. #fail
@AbigailHS: NBC email marketing fail. Born and raised right outside of Boston, currently live ...
