The Influence of Symbols

When I was six years old, I insisted on being a Grateful Dead bear for Halloween.  Like most six-year-olds, I had absolutely no idea who the Grateful Dead were, but I'd seen the dancing bears on my older sisters' t-shirts, on the back of my cousin's car, and most influential of all, on my brother-in-law's ankle in the form of a tattoo.  I knew these bears were cool.
